August 22, 2011

Well, life is a little different here in Salem, Kentucky. I have a little bit of resentment on being here but I know that God has a purpose for me to be here. This area feels like my first area, Tell City. It is supposed to be a ward but it functions like a branch. There were probably 70 people which is better than I have had. We are teaching a lot of less actives and it is going well so far. There are a couple who really want to change their lives around. We have been tracting a few times and no one wants to hear about the message we have to share. It is going to be slow work I believe. We have a batism in two weeks. A lady named Brenda. She is a very elect person, so I hear. I have not met her because she has been out of town. They were able to teach her in six weeks and she has no problem with anything. It will be exciting to meet her. :) This place is called Salem the skunk house. I named it :) There are a ton of skunks and everyday we get a whiff of skunks. How good is that? haha. We met a member and he is blind and he says that I sound like I am 10 years old. haha. :) If only. On wednesday we do alot of physical labor. We just do all of our service activities all in one day apparently. We go clean at the YMCA. We go to one of the big dance rooms and it has tall mirrors that we clean and sweep and mop the floor. We walk the 1 1/2 miles to the YMCA and then we walk home. Then we mow a members lawn. It is fun. I have not mowed lawns forever. I like it. I realized why I am having troubles maintaining my weight. In Corbin, we taught. In Salem, we walk. haha. There is alot of work to be done in this area. It kind of stinks to think about how long missionaries have been here and how many times a street may have been tracted. I keep praying that God will tell us where to go. A couple months ago I had a dream about tracting on Mann St. and that there was a very elect family there. I have been looking in every area I have been in and there was no mann street. So, finally this area. This area has a mann street. We have tracted a little bit of it and so far, no such luck. I am putting my trust in God though. There is someone there I believe.
One bit of exciting news. Do you want to know who is in my District???? SISTER MIKAMI!!!! I was so so so so excited to hear that she was in my district. She called me the night that I got into Salem. I missed her so much. On friday we got to see her. I am going to be able to see her alot and it is going to be great.
We had a good lesson with a girl name Maryiah.(Moriah). She is 13 years old and is a very sweet girl but she does not pay attention very well. She has had all the lessons and she wants to be baptized but we are waiting for permission first. We knock on her door and she comes out and says she was busy. Appartently she has said that alot. So, I asked why she was busy. She said she was waiting for her brother to get home so they (Grandma, her and brother) could go to New Albany. I was not going to leave without teaching her a little lesson though so I said, "Well, can we come in and wait with you?" That got her and she let us in. Shortly after that she says, "OH, I remember. We went to New Albany yesterday." haha. that is what I thought. :) So we teach her a lesson and we had cups that go along with the restoration lesson. I knew that we would have to make it really interesting for her because she does not have that long of an attention span. So I got down on the floor with her and I told her we were going to have a lot of fun. We were going to make a pyramid. She like that. The lesson went really really well. I was albe to hold her attention and she understood alot. I like her alot alot and I can't wait for her to be baptized. I also made her a reading chart so if she reads for thirty days and goes to church for 5 weeks, she will be able to get a pizza. She like that. :)
So that was pretty much the week. We visit alot of Less actives and that can be frustrating at times. :) It will be good. I love you all. Love Sister Amanda Ralph.
